A tale told time and again of how Persephone became the Queen of the Dead. Hades came on his chariot and took her away, in her anguish Demeter let her duties fall to the way, yet what thinks of all this Kore? A take taken yet again on a tale told over and again.

Let me start by saying how much I appreciate the author for mentioning the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. All of Anjali’s books begin with them and I think it is so important that authors mention these in their works.
This is a retelling of the story of Hades and Persephone and it is the first one that I’ve read by an Indian author. The format of this retelling felt more poetic than story telling. It flowed very smoothly and I liked how the tale was narrated. Short and crisp with no extra words to unnecessarily lengthen the story.
I loved the way Persephone’s thoughts changed before and after abduction. Her internal struggle to accept what people did to her, especially her mother, and to come to terms with the fact that love could be toxic if not kept in check was what I loved the most. She is docile but she never forgets to question other people’s actions towards her. She is mature and understanding, especially when it comes to her mother and Hades, but she also stands up to them for her rights.
It was a quick read. Definitely recommended.
