Afterthought feels a lot like reading someone’s thoughts at 2 am, a little messy, vulnerable, dreamy, and sometimes painful, but somehow comforting at the same time. What I really liked was that it wasn’t just about heartbreak. The poems move through longing, imagination, fear, nostalgia, self-doubt and slowly towards acceptance and learning to keep going.
A few lines really stayed with me, especially, “some people live longer in imagination than they ever did in reality.” I think that’s such a simple but painfully relatable thought. I also loved “pain turned into poetry, and afterthoughts became art” because it captures what this book feels like at its core.
What I liked most, though, was how the idea of love changes throughout the book. It starts feeling very personal, but eventually becomes something much bigger, more like about experiences, memories, loss, hope and simply being human. The ending, “to love, I say, ‘I love you” felt like such a lovely way to bring everything together.
It’s not a book that tries to give you answers to everything. It just feels like someone sitting beside you and saying, Yup, I’ve felt this too. ❤️
