  • How to Produce Socially Conscious Books

Ways to produce sustainable books- A Publisher’s Guide- Part 3- Socially Conscious Books

    Written by- Anjali Roongta

Do you wish to make a difference with your publishing house? Help make the world a better place for your children and grandchildren to live in? Yet you are feeling stuck. Sustainability has a social aspect that many big companies ignore behind the guise of recycled raw materials and plastic-free packaging. Here is how you can do better.

Ways to have a socially conscious organization and books:

    • Leveraging social media:

We all know the importance of raising awareness. One way to do that is to use social media. You can share the importance of sustainable and socially ethical publishing. Or you can share tips and best practices for authors, readers, and fellow publishers to see.

    • Industry standards and certifications:

Developing and promoting industry standards for sustainable publishing can encourage companies to adopt eco-friendly practices. This includes certifications. They ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the best practices. It promotes accountability as well.

    • Lead by example:

Publishers and authors can implement sustainable and socially ethical practices in their own businesses. This can serve as an example for others.

    • Collaboration:

You can consider collaborating with organizations and industry groups that promote sustainable practices. It can encourage wider adoption.

    • Encourage authors to write on meaningful topics:

From gender inequity to mental health, authors can use the power of their words to bring discourse.

    • Fair pay to workers at all levels of the organization:

Whether it is a freelancer, an intern, or any other worker, ensuring fair pay goes a long way for an ethical company. Say no to unpaid internships.

    • Source your raw materials ethically:

While going plastic-free is great, a sustainable company sources its materials from partners that pay workers ethically.

    • Support local and or or small printers:

Supporting local businesses helps both the environment and small companies just starting out.

    • Support new authors: New authors bring new ideas and new voices.

We understand that quality checks are important. So is publishing books that match a publishing house’s ethics. However, it is also important to try and publish authors who are new and not gate keep publishing. NotionPress’ self-publishing is a great example of that. Do remember good writing is always of good quality. Editors are a necessity.

    • Create jobs:

We understand that many small publishers cannot often afford to keep employees. Do try and hire people when possible, especially those from marginalized areas of society.

    • Use dyslexic-friendly fonts when possible:

When possible have either audio features or use fonts that people with dyslexia can read.

    • Be inclusive as an organization and use trigger warnings in your works:

Queer-friendly and inclusive should be the minimum for a sustainable organization. You can also have other forms of inclusivity. Sustainable organizations make sustainable books that are inclusive and have trigger warning for informed reading.

Does Muses_Saga do all this? Not at the moment. We are still figuring things out. we are trying to find sustainable partners. We use our advertising space to only promote sustainable products. We are trying. And so can you. Do remember though, healthy sustainability is a delicate balance and a learning curve. However, organizations have the most responsibility to be sustainable. What do you think? Let’s start a discourse in the comments below.

  • The Benefits of Using Recycled Paper

Why Use Recycled Paper in Your Book?

    Author- Anjali Roongta

With the doomsday clock ticking ever closer, authors and publishers are looking for a way to make eco-friendly books. A simple way to make your paperback eco-friendly is by using recycled paper. You get the feel and smell of paper, to an extent, and your impact is lessened too. Your eyes will probably also thank you when not constantly subjected to blue light. So let’s dive right in. What are the benefits of using recycled paper in your book production?

Benefits of Using Recycled Paper in Your Book Production

    Reduces waste

The biggest perk of recycling paper is that it stops paper from entering landfills. Less waste always a good thing. If we can keep the resources we have in circulation for longer- our planet has an easier time. Interested in starting your low-waste journey? We have just the planner to help you.

    Reduces emissions- Methane and Co2

In landfills, organic material like paper releases methane which is worse than CO2 for global warming. Recycling paper also reduces CO2 emissions according to some. Almost by 20% when compared to the emissions released when the paper is being burned to get rid of it.

    Uses less energy

Making and then getting rid of virgin paper can need almost twice the amount of energy that recycling paper does, according to some sources. This is because the waste paper is often burnt. Others say recycling paper requires 31% less energy than making virgin paper. Now, of course, there is debate on this, for recycled paper needs virgin strands. Recycling also tends to be labor and energy intensive. Yet if you cannot use paper made from waste, recycling is worth a try.

    Less water intensive

Recycled paper production can take almost 35,000 fewer liters of water than producing the same amount of virgin fiber paper. How’s that for helping avert the water crisis?

Reduces Deforestation and Monocultures for Paper

Paper comes from trees. To make new paper, we have to cut down trees. Now, of course, sustainably sourced paper exists and that is great. Recycled paper is a good option if we are looking to protect our forests and the biodiversity that thrives in them. Furthermore, monoculture for paper production is a real issue that recycled paper can solve. Additionally, recycled fibers are also more effective in making paper. It is estimated that 1.2 tonnes of recycled fibers produce 1 tonne of recycled paper. The wood required for the same amount of virgin paper? 2.5 tonnes.

It is easier on the eyes

I can hear you rolling your eyes. How is recycled paper easier on the eyes than any other type of paper? You are right. It is not. I am talking about reading on your cell phone or laptop. I do that a lot and my eyes suffer because of it. Of course, just like some books are enjoyed on paperback, fanfiction is more enjoyable on a screen. Yet, recycled paper books can give you the feel of a real book and be easier on your eyes compared to a screen that emits blue light. E-readers might be easier on your eyes than a mobile phone too, but then comes the question of how much are you reading. For if you are not a voracious reader, a paperback might be the more eco-friendly option for you.

    Reduces Pollution

Burning paper in landfills increases air pollution. Recycling takes care of that problem.

Shows your commitment to Being Eco-Friendly

As a brand, publisher, or author you can create both awareness and show your commitment to being eco-friendly through the raw materials and packaging you use. Avoiding plastic, using recycled paper, using eco-inks, and otherwise implementing sustainable practices in your book production shows what you stand for as a brand. Want to learn how to make sustainable books? We have just the series for you.

While some say that using recycled paper is more financially viable than using virgin paper that has not been the case in our experience. We also know that recycling paper can be difficult if you do not have access to the right resources. Thus the paper you use might go to landfills instead of recycling facilities. So, we understand that sometimes there is no option but to use virgin paper. After all, even recycled paper eventually needs strands of virgin fibers. How to ensure that the virgin paper you get is eco-friendly? Keep reading our blogs to find out. We share tips on how to make eco-friendly and sustainable books and more.

  • Ways to Promote Sustainable Practises among Publishers: A Publishers Guide- Part Two- Financially Viable Eco-Friendly Books

How to Make Financially Viable Eco-Friendly Paperbacks

     Author- Anjali Roongta
When someone mentions sustainability, we think they are talking about the environment alone. However, sustainability is multi-faceted and involves environmental, social, and financial aspects. To cater to customer demands, publishers are going green. Yet how are we to make affordable eco-friendly paperbacks if the raw materials themselves cost more than a non-sustainable series? Are paperbacks about to become a thing of the past? Will they be unable to keep up with the sustainability requirements of the eco-conscious writer and reader? Also consider, they have to compete with piracy and cheaper digital copies. Fear not, for there may be ways to make sustainable paperbacks that are affordable. To their target audience at least.

In our previous blog, we covered how publishers could make eco-friendly books. We also shared how they could encourage sustainable reading and writing. In this one, we cover how publishers can make those practices affordable.

While theoretically, eco-friendly books made on recycled paper should be cheaper to make, the reality is different. Due to the need for more labor and the processing involved, recycled paper usually costs more than virgin paper. Furthermore, PoD, or Print-on-Demand services, increases the cost of printing a copy. This is without trying to include eco-inks . While making a completely eco-friendly book is not impossible, as proved by Tara Books, it can be difficult to make it affordable to the masses. Muses_Saga is on a mission to do just that. We provide eco-friendly books at no cost to people or the planet, through our sustainable online reading program. E-books are also easy to price in an affordable manner as there are fewer resources and labour involved in the making of one. The cost of shipping is also nil in the case of e-books.

The question then remains, how do we make sustainable paperbacks and hardcovers that are also economical?

Tips for Making Financially Sustainable Eco-Friendly Paperbacks

    · Know your fixed costs-

Knowledge of the costs that you have to cover no matter, whether you publish a book or not, is essential when making a financial plan. And unless you have a financial plan, you won’t be able to make long-term decisions. You might price products wrong. Or not know how many products you need to sell a month to keep your business afloat.

    · Look for alternatives-

While it might not seem like it, there are several vendors with sustainable products and services. Therefore, it is imperative for you to find vendors who can provide the value you need for your work within a budget you can afford. Do remember, paying a fair wage is part of being sustainable too.

    · Give the customer value-

Perhaps it is time the paperback industry changes. We mass-produced paperbacks to make them cheaper. So perhaps a sustainable paperback has to be a personalized experience.

    · Scale your business-

There is a reason mass production worked. It reduces the price of making one book. If there is a way you can produce books without increasing waste and washing resources, then scaling your business is a good idea. You can donate books that aren’t bought to libraries for one instead of pulping them. It might decrease your profit margins, however, so it isn’t the perfect solution- if we can consider it a solution at all.

    · Education and awareness:

Providing information on sustainable publishing can help authors and readers understand their impact. It also communicates to them their power. This can result in them making more informed decisions and buying more eco-friendly books.

    · Green procurement:

Encouraging authors, and readers to consider the environment when making decisions can help. As a publisher, you can make it easy for readers to choose sustainable options by labeling them. Extra coupons and discounts could be provided, if economical, for eco-friendly products. Or they could be personalized products.

The paperback industry is at an impasse- how to make eco-friendly books that are affordable without sacrificing so much profit that the whole production needs to shut down thus affecting hundreds of livelihoods in a negative manner. It is time for a change. Follow our blogs to see how to make ethical, eco-friendly, and financially viable books aka, the publishers’ guide to sustainable paperbacks.

  • Ways to produce sustainable books- A Publisher’s Guide- Part 1

Here’s How You Make an Eco-Friendly Book

    Author- Anjali Roongta

Consumer awareness of environmental sustainability is increasing. This is forcing industries all over the world to promote their products as “green”. Are you a publisher who’s scared that unless they are able to make their company more sustainable, writers will abandon them?

Well, stop catastrophizing. There is a solution. Make eco-friendly and sustainable books. How you ask? Well, read on.

The pulp and paper industry is responsible for deforestation, an increase in waste, and the contamination of waterways. It also contributes to at least 2% of global carbon emissions. It reached a historic high in 2021. Hence, consumers are rallying. Thus, now, print-on-demand technologies and recycled paper are everywhere in publishing. Supply chains are under scrutiny too. Readers and authors demand eco-friendly books.

At Muses_ Saga, environmental sustainability is of paramount importance. We have introduced several practices to make our books both affordable and sustainable. With this blog, we extend that knowledge to other publishers on how to increase eco-friendly practices in their businesses.

    • Provide Print-on-Demand Services:

PoD reduces the number of unwanted books printed. Unwanted books often end up in landfills. Or worse they remain unread on bookshelves until they are torn and pulped. Not only is this disrespectful to books, but it is also wasteful. Hence, do the planet a favor and only print books that are sure to find a home. Publishers that are committed to PoD services include NotionPress and Muses_Saga.

    • Using eco-inks:

Petroleum-based inks are bad for the planet and human health. Our research and work with industry professionals show that at the moment it is not truly possible to make a small number of books using eco-inks. However, it is not impossible either. This is especially true for publishers who print large orders of books. Tara Books uses eco-inks.

    • Having sustainable supply chains:

From ethical and eco-friendly sourcing of paper and ink to a sustainable delivery system, a sustainable supply chain is an invaluable part of making an eco-friendly company. Having printers in multiple cities, as NotionPress does, can reduce the emissions from transportation too.

    • Not using plastic for lamination or packaging:

Reducing the use of plastic, especially new plastic or single-use plastic, is an important step in reducing plastic pollution. Therefore, water-based tape, paper packaging, and re-used or reusable and recyclable packaging are all good ideas. A cover made of a durable and recyclable material is a great option too.

    • Encouraging recycling and repurposing of books:

This reduces the environmental impact of disposal. However, it is better to donate or re-sell the books. As a publisher, you can also donate unsold copies of books to libraries.

    • Supporting Climate-Fiction:

Climate Fiction is an emerging genre. Thus, publishing fiction and non-fiction work around themes of climate change could be a smart move. It can spread awareness and build a profitable brand image.

    • Use a digital proofing process:

Before printing, use a digital proofing process to catch any errors and make the required changes. This can help reduce the need for multiple print runs which in turn reduces waste.

    • Encourage readers and writers to buy sustainable books:

We will cover more on this in our next blog on financing sustainable books, but you can encourage readers and writers to make more sustainable choices by personalizing sustainable books and providing certifications or labels to show they are sustainable.

    • Choose a sustainable printer:

Look for a printer that uses eco-friendly practices such as vegetable-based inks, recycled paper, or energy-efficient equipment.

    • Use recycled, sustainably sourced, tree-free, or reused paper:

Many publishers are now using sustainably sourced FSC-certified paper. Others are committing to using a portion of recycled paper. Muses_Saga uses 100% recycled paper but there are other options too such as BlueCat’s sustainable handmade tree-free paper. Keep in mind though, that printing on handmade paper can be difficult.

    • Use Chlorine-Free Paper:

While aesthetics are important, they are not more important than human health. Thus using chlorine-free paper is a good way to go. Where is chlorine used in paper you ask? For bleaching them white of course.

    A Parting Note

Remember, being sustainable increases the chances of your publishing business doing better in the long term. And thus, to survive as a small upcoming publishing house, you need to cater to the demands of readers and writers. One such demand is eco-friendliness.

Are the ways we mentioned the only ways to create a sustainable publishing house? No. These are the ways you can create an eco-friendly publishing house. Financial and social sustainability is yet to be seen. To learn more about those aspects of sustainable publishing, and the how to battle challenges faced by publishers trying to go green return next week for our blog.
